What Is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

If you have a disability and want to live in your own home with the help of paid personal care workers, SIL is one option you can consider. This support package is available for people with moderate to high support needs, and can also be used to build skills and gain independence.

The goal of supported independent living NDIS is to allow participants to stay in their own homes or community housing, and live as independently as possible. You can apply for SIL at your next NDIS planning meeting, and your OT will assess your eligibility. If you’re approved, your NDIS plan will include a SIL funding amount.

You can use this SIL funding for housing managed by your chosen SIL provider or in your own home, private rental or government housing. However, it’s important to remember that SIL can’t be used to pay for rent or other daily living expenses, like groceries.

It is also important to note that SIL is separate from core supports and capacity-building supports, even though they may share some of the same goals and tasks. This means that you can’t access SIL by using your core support budget, and the same goes for supplemental supports such as assistive technology or personal care.

How Much Does SIL Cost?

There are two different levels of SIL: standard and complex. Standard SIL is for participants with a mild to moderate level of support, while complex SIL is for those with more severe and complex support needs. For example, if you require 24*7 active assistance and supervision, or overnight support, then you’ll likely need to access complex SIL.

If you’re eligible, your OT will create an individualised SIL funding agreement, which includes your SIL price guide. You’ll then work with your SIL provider to come up with a roster of care that meets your needs and preferences. This can be a difficult process, and it’s important to work with providers who understand your support needs.

As a participant, you should always be aware of how your SIL budget is being spent, and be aware that any additional costs can affect your overall plan budget. If you’re worried about your SIL budget, you can always speak to your NDIS planner or support coordinator.
